In 2017, we had the privilege of launching the first Royal Family Kids Camp in the Klein Karoo. Since then, six successful camps have taken place in the Ladismith area, reaching 192 children whose lives have been deeply affected by trauma, abuse, and neglect. Through the RFK programme, these children experience love, care, and a renewed sense of worth. Their confidence is rebuilt, their dignity restored, and for a few precious days, they are simply allowed to be children again
But five days is not enough. Many of these children return to foster homes or temporary placements with little continued support. With over 500 children currently under social care in the Kannaland district and the number growing daily, the need for safe homes and ongoing care is critical
Arukah Foundation was established to help meet this need by creating long-term solutions for vulnerable children. Our mission is to bring healing and restoration through a structured five-phase plan that supports both children and the wider community
Phase 1: Foster Care Homes and Early Childhood Centre
The first step is establishing a foster care home that provides a safe, loving environment for at least six children and their house parents. We aim to build seven such homes on our land, with the first already 60 percent complete. Each home costs about R450,000 to build. We are producing our own concrete blocks, which also creates employment opportunities in the community
This phase also includes a nursery school and educational centre for both the children in our care and the surrounding community. Special support will be offered to children with learning challenges to help them reach their full potential
Phase 2: Agricultural Development
We plan to cultivate crops and train children in agricultural skills, helping the homes become self-sufficient
Phase 3: Skills Development Centre
A training centre will be established to teach practical skills including technical, domestic, and agricultural skills to individuals who may not follow traditional academic paths
Phase 4: Foster Care Cluster
This phase expands the project to accommodate up to 50 children including specialised homes for those with disabilities, behavioural challenges, or special needs. A permanent social worker will also be appointed
Phase 5: Full Children and Youth Care Centre
Ultimately, Arukah Foundation aims to become a registered Children and Youth Care Centre, providing a permanent home for more than 50 children. The children will also have opportunities to continue their education in agriculture or business management
We have secured long-term access to land near Ladismith, with sufficient water for farming and space for the planned homes and centres. Building materials have already been donated, and construction has begun. Our goal is to make the centre self-sufficient using solar energy to move off the municipal grid
While the Department of Social Development provides a foster care grant of R1,120 per child per month, it does not cover all basic needs. We therefore rely on private sector partnerships and community support to continue this vital work. With your help, we can give the children of Kannaland not only safety and care but also hope and a future
Together we can restore purpose, dignity, and opportunity for each child
