Healing Takes Time

The Challenges of Caring for Traumatized Children

At the Arukah Foundation, our work goes far beyond providing food, shelter, and safety. Every child who comes into our care brings with them a story, often marked by loss, neglect, or trauma. While our home offers a fresh start, healing is a journey that takes time, patience, and deep understanding.

One of the greatest challenges we face is helping children learn to trust again. Many arrive guarded, anxious, or withdrawn, uncertain if this new environment will be any different from what they have known before. Building that sense of safety requires consistency, familiar faces, calm routines, and gentle reassurance that they are valued and protected.

We also face psychological and emotional hurdles. Some children struggle with emotional outbursts, fear of abandonment, or difficulty forming attachments. Others carry invisible wounds that affect their sleep, focus, and self-esteem. Each response is unique, shaped by past experiences, and it reminds us that healing cannot be rushed.

Our caregivers and staff balance structure with compassion, discipline with empathy, and patience with support. Every day presents new challenges, from managing emotional crises to providing individual attention to children who may act out or withdraw. Staff must constantly assess each child’s needs and respond in ways that help build confidence and trust. The work is emotionally draining at times, yet it is also deeply rewarding.

Another challenge is ensuring that the children receive professional support. Counselling, therapeutic interventions, and educational support are vital. Many children need specialised care to process trauma, and arranging these services while maintaining a consistent home environment requires careful planning and resources.

In addition, there are practical challenges. Keeping a children’s home running requires food, clothing, school supplies, transport, utilities, and maintenance. Even small shortages can affect daily routines and the children’s sense of stability. Managing these needs while also focusing on emotional care is a constant balancing act.

Despite the difficulties, moments of progress make every challenge worthwhile. Seeing a child smile for the first time in weeks, watching them make friends or succeed in school, or hearing them express hope for the future are quiet victories that remind us why this work matters. Every milestone, no matter how small, is a step toward healing and rebuilding lives.

At its heart, this work is about restoration. Every day, we help children rebuild not only their lives but also their sense of self-worth and belonging. The road is not easy, but it is one paved with purpose, hope, and love. With proper support, these children can thrive and grow into resilient, confident adults.

Your support is essential in making this possible. By contributing, you help us provide counselling, safe spaces, trained caregivers, educational resources, and the daily necessities that allow these children to heal. Every donation brings stability and hope to children who have faced unimaginable challenges.
